Plasma-wall interactions in the TFR machine
Abstract
Experiments with the tokamak machine, TFR, operating up to 200 kA with 40 kG, have been stopped because the vacuum vessel broke suddenly during a pulse. Three kinds of damages have been observed: heat erosion of the limiter, deposition of eroded materials around the vacuum vessel and regularly spaced impacts on the vacuum vessel. The last phenomenon is new and very severe. Runaway electrons are responsible for the damage of the limiter. The regualrly spaced impacts are not yet understood. Several explanations are proposed.
