Stopping rate and energy loss of cosmic ray muons in sand
Abstract
The stopping rate of negative cosmic ray muons in an outcropping Miocene sand was determined by using scintillation techniques to be (1.29 plus or minus 0.05) x .00001 exp (-0.103z) muon/cu cm sec over the depth range of z from 3 to 11 m. This stopping rate is greater by a factor of 2 to 4 than previous emulsion measurements made in this depth range. The energy loss rate of cosmic ray muons over the same depth interval was determined to be nearly constant at 1.55 plus or minus 0.06 MeV sq cm.
