Scattering in the shell of Eta Carinae.
Abstract
A discussion of characteristic (iifferences between the core and shell spectra of Car is presented. Previous polarization observations strongly suggest the possibility that scattering mechanisms are active in the production of the shell spectra. A simple model is analyzed for the effects of scattering in the shell and it appears that scattering by grains as well as the hypothesized scattering by electrons may be present. The scattering model supports the suggestion that a 131-type star may be one component of the core of Car. Subject headings: line profiles - nebulae, individual - radiative transfer
