Detectability and nature of CNO anomalies in early-type main-sequence stars.
Abstract
Summary. Using model atmosphere techniques, we calculate selected spectral features in near-main-sequence stars in the range 0 B 5 for eight different element mixtures which are chosen to characterize the anomalous CNO line strengths discovered by Walborn. We discuss when CNO abundance anomalies can be detected at classification dispersion through anomalous line strengths or through inconsistencies from different classification criteria. A comparison of our results with the predictions by Paczynski (1973) does not give much support to the hypothesis that meridional circulation causes the N type anomaly in hot main-sequence stars.
