Observations of some early-type supergiants with variable Halpha profiles.
Abstract
Study of multiple high-dispersion Ha spectrograms of 20 early-type supergiants indicates that 13 of these stars showed large, visually evident changes in the strength or structure of the Ha as well as in the strength of other prominent lines in the red region of the spectrum. These stars should be suitable candidates for investigating possible coupling between mass loss and turbulence. Techniques previously used for studying this problem can be extended to earlier spectral types by using the Si ii lines AA6347, 6371, the C ii lines AA6578, 6582 `and the He ilines AA5876, 6678 as turbulence indicators.
