A search for UV-bright stars in 27 globular clusters.
Abstract
Twenty-seven globular clusters have been searched for stars that lie to the left of the giant branch and above the horizontal branch in the HR.diagram. Stellar structure computations, by other authors, suggest that stars cross this region of the HR-diagram while evolving from the horizontal branch to the white dwarf stage. We present the results of our survey in order to provide a finding list for future investigations of post-horizontal branch evolution. The stars of interest have brighter U magnitudes than any other cluster stars. This fact permitted their identification by a technique that involved blinking short-exposure U- and V-plates and suggested the name "UV-bright stars". Cluster membership has not yet been established for most of the UV-bright stars found in this survey. Nevertheless, the proximity of many of the stars to the cluster centers makes them likely candidates for membership. Key words: globular clusters - post-horizontal branch evolution - UV-bright stars
