Unsteady flows
Abstract
Some fluid mechanic aspects of unsteady flow are considered, with a distinction being made between gross unsteadiness (e.g. a turbine subject to overall pressure fluctuations, as in a marine diesel engine supercharger), and blade to blade unsteadiness, (the fluctuating flow over an individual blade due to nearby blades moving past, creating wakes or potential flow variations or wakes entering the machine). Unsteady flow, work transfer and changes in stagnation enthalpy and stagnation pressure are discussed, the blade to blade problem is analyzed, and experimental and analytical work on the gross unsteadiness problem is described.
