Electrodeless MHD accelerator
Abstract
A description of the traveling wave concept is given and its behavior in an electrodeless magnetohydrodynamic accelerator is presented. A theoretical study on the effect of plasma in a magnetic field is described. Subsonic traveling wave accelerated tests were carried out and compared with the theoretical models. A subsonic plasma tunnel which is being used to evaluate reentry flight instrumentation in a known plasma environment was used for the tests. The wide range of plasma parameters attainable is of interest in evaluating electrostatic probes, microwave probes, and various antennas.
