Use of BVR photometry to derive metal abundances in G8-K2 giants.
Abstract
We have found that the color difference (B - V) - (V-r) correlates with the iron-to-hydrogen ratio of stars of type G8-K2III. The slope of the correlation is greater for stars with V-r<0.70 than for the cooler stars. Metal abundances derived from the index (B- V) - (V-r) are uncertain by about factors of 2 and 3 for the hotter and cooler stars, respectively. The application of our system to stars in M67 indicates that M67 stars have 60% more metals than do stars in Hyades-Praesepe. The uncertainties are sufficiently large to permit the composition of M67 to be identified with Hyades-Praesepe.
