On the optics of small graphite spheres
Abstract
Recently published data on the absorptive index of single graphite crystals are shown to be in satisfactory agreement with the Lorenta theory of anomalous dispersion. The complex refractive index m(A) arising from such a theory is used to compute extinction cross-sections of very small graphite spheres, using the first term approximation. The approximate calculations obtained in the present paper mdicate that the extinction has an approximately A-1 dependence in 2 > A> , and thereafter rises steeply in the ultraviolet. This effect is probably of importance in explaining recent ultraviolet observations.
