The vibrational spectra of acetyl hypochlorite
Abstract
Raman spectra of solutions of acetyl hypochlorite in carbon tetrachloride and in nitromethane, and infrared absorption spectra (4000-400 cm -1) of these solutions and of the vapor phase are reported. The spectra suffer from interference by decomposition products of the unstable hypochlorite. Comparison of the observed frequencies with those calculated for two assumed molecular models using the Urey-Bradley force field with transferred force constants suggests a planar heavy-atom-skeleton, cis molecular configuration; in this model the chlorine atom and carbonyl oxygen atom are in the cis arrangement.
