Resolving time of G.M. counters and its relation to input rate
Abstract
With the use of scaling factor statistics and an interval counting circuit, the resolving time of G.M. counters was determined for input rates between several hundred and several thousand counts per second. The experiments proved: (1) that the resolving time of a given counter, for a given sensitivity of the recording apparatus, is independent of the input rate; (2) that the counting loss formula N ∗ = {N}/{1 + Nτ} is correct for G.M. counters. The latter fact was confirmed by measurements with the two source method. Finally, by means of special oscillographic display, it was shown that the resolving time depends strongly on the sensitivity of the recording apparatus.
