On the Schuster Problem for a Moving Atmosphere. I.
Abstract
A numerical method is described for computing absorption-line profiles in a plane-parallel stratified moving atmosphere. The method is applied to the case where (a) the outward normal velocity v increases linearly with optical depth r measured outward from the photosphere, and (b) the scattering function has a rectangular shape with (v) = (To for P - Po < Ap, and (T(P) = 0 outside this range. After discussing the accuracy of the computations made on an IBM 7090 electronic computer the results are given in the form of tables and diagrams for various values of P and x1, where P = V1#1, 1#i = 1/ V 3, V = outward velocity along the normal at the top of the atmosphere, Xl = T1/21#1, and T1 = total optical thickness of the scattering atmosphere at the center of the line.
