Recalculation of bond moments and bond derivatives in deuterated methanes
Abstract
The bond moments and bond derivatives in methane have been recalculated using force constants recently reported by Jones and McDowell. The use of these constants has confirmed the previous conclusion that the bond moment and the bond derivative have opposite signs. The indicated values are: {μ CH}/{γ CH} = ± 0.30 {debye}/{angstrom}and{∂μ}/{∂γ}CH = ± 0.65 {debye}/{angstrom} The conclusion of Coulson that the CH bond moment has a polarity of C +H - leads one to favor the upper combination of signs.
