The Absolute ƒ-Values of λ 3247 of Cu I and λ 3720 of Fe I.
Abstract
The absolute J-values, or oscillator strengths, of the resonance lines in the Cu 1 and Fe 1 spectra have been measured by observing the equivalent widths of these lines absorbed by a beam of atoms whose density was directly determined. The theory of the curve of growth for a line absorbed by the atomic beam is developed, and experimental of the validity of the assumptions involved and of the critical features of the experiment are described. The absolute J-value of the Cu 1 line X 3247 was found to be f = 0.31 and that of the Fe 1 line X 3720 wasf = 0032. These results are compared with those of other investigations.
