Dimensions of the Fixed Stars, with especial reference to Binaries and Variables of the Algol Type.
Abstract
Various methods for determining the diameters of stars are reviewed. The diameters of stars of known parallax can be determined if the intrinsic brightness is known. Making some assumptions, the diameters of the stars in the Alpha Centauri and 61 Cygni systems are estimated. The use of visual binaries for estimating dimaeters is outlined. The explantion that variable stars of the Algol type are eclipsing systems provides a promising way to determine diameters. This is illustrated by a thorough discussion of Algol.
