NextGEOSS data hub and platform - providing a collaborative space allowing faster uptake of Earth observations across Earth sciences
Abstract
We are gathering substantial amounts of data on the planet's physical, chemical, and biological systems. This data is provided by a plethora of international, national and local programs and projects. The challenge now is to ensure that all this data is made available to those developing Earth observation-based applications and services for science and for better management of our planet. NextGEOSS, a European Earth Observation data hub and platform is helping to make the necessary connections between the different sources of data, between users across disciplines, between the different types of data and data products, and between user communities and data providers. NextGEOSS is defragmenting the ecosystem of Earth observation data platforms and infrastructures, making it easy to discover, access, and process data. Developed with the support of EU-funding, NextGEOSS provides a European catalogue of Earth observation data and platform services. Through NextGEOSS, developers can select from a range of individual but interoperable services, seamlessly covering the entire life cycle of data allowing scientists to focus first and foremost on the scientific issues. Among the services is a User Feedback mechanism that allows exchange of experience (meta data) across platforms as well. Another important feature developed by NextGEOSS is an OpenSearch API extension for CKAN, thus supporting easier connection with all types of data. All in all the data hub and platform serve as an effective collaboration space. NextGEOSS created the data hub and platform with the help of users represented by pilots developing various services based on Earth observations. The NextGEOSS user-centric co-design process ensures that the data hub and platform services serve the Earth observation communities. The NextGEOSS data hub and platform services will be presented, focusing on the onboarding process that support users through the NextGEOSS 5-step user experience; user engagement, data preparation, platform setup, pilot integration, service operations. The collaborative platform allows transfer of knowledge across disciplines and user communities. The onboarding process accommodate users and lead to faster uptake of Earth observations in scientific applications finally improving our understanding of planet Earth.
