Innovative Applications of NASA Satellite Data: An Overview of NASA Health and Air Quality Applications
Abstract
Global health threats - such as air pollution and vector-borne disease transmission - can directly affect the economic, health, and social well-being of citizens. Innovative research applications can transform our knowledge of Earth systems and the direct and indirect impacts on human health. Earth-observing satellite data offer a deeper understanding of the natural and anthropogenic changes that affect global ecosystems. This insight can complement current initiatives that evaluate the progress of national and international health objectives, such as the Sustainable Development Goals. This presentation will provide an overview of NASA remote sensing data and technology that can detect and monitor environmental health threats for risk assessment and public health surveillance. It will also describe the role of community partnerships to strengthen scientific communication approaches and offer recommendations to integrate citizen science activities.
