Experiences in Professional Research Organizations and Atmospheric Chemistry at Hendrix (EPROACH): A career discernment program for undergraduate students
Abstract
Undergraduate students don't know what they don't know, particularly with respect to careers and career pathways in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The Experiences in Professional Research Organizations and Atmospheric Chemistry at Hendrix (EPROACH) program aims to connect students to professional research scientists, their research, and their career paths in an effort to engage students in exploration and opportunities for careers in research. While the program's focus is largely in the field of atmospheric chemistry, students engage in professional development activities and are introduced to scientists at all stages of their careers, at a variety of research platforms, including academic, governmental, non-profit, and industrial settings. Direct and indirect assessment measures of the program indicate that, despite the intended career path of a student, the EPROACH program has had a significant impact on program participants, has resulted in an enhancement of student interest in the geosciences, and has enhanced recruitment of diverse talents in the field of atmospheric chemistry. Additionally, the overall impact of the program on career development was as significant when executed on a flexible, remotely-engaged schedule as it was as a two-week intensive on-site experience.
