The relationship between TETRA-II TGFs and lightning peak current
Abstract
The ground-based TETRA-II experiment has detected 46 terrestrial gamma flash (TGF) events during four years of operation. Most of these events are closely associated with lightning activity. From correlations with lightning sferics, the production of the observed TGF events is strongly related to lightning leader channels. We present the results of lightning return stroke peak current in association with TETRA-II events, showing that TETRA-II TGFs are associated with the highest peak current among the lightning flashes that produced them. Implications of these results will be discussed in the context of thundercloud potential difference.
