Dynamics of the extremely elongated cloud on Mars Arsia Mons volcano
Abstract
The Visual Monitoring Camera (VMC) onboard Mars Express, also known as the Mars Webcam, is a simple camera initially added to Mars Express as an engineering instrument, and later used as an outreach instrument. More recently it was upgraded to science instrument, while its images keep being published in Flickr (https://www.flickr.com/photos/esa_marswebcam/) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/esamarswebcam). Since September 13 2018, an impressive elongated cloud was spotted by VMC around the Arsia Mons volcano, this curious cloud atracted the attention of thousands of people who were curious about this singular event in Mars. Thus, in October, ESA released a public statement about the cloud commenting preliminar conclusions (http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Space_Science/Mars_Express/Mars_Express_keeps_an_eye_on_curious_cloud). This work is the first scientific study of this curious cloud, based on images from VMC, OMEGA, and HRSC onboard Mars Express, and IUVS onboard MAVEN.
