Principal Components of Short-term Variability in Venus' UV Albedo
Abstract
Venus, when viewed at ultraviolet wavelengths shows a variety of changing patterns at its cloud tops. Here, we use a statistical technique called Principal Component Analysis to find the dominant components of these changing patterns. We find that some of these components show signatures of the overturning circulation of the atmosphere, and various atmospheric waves. Some of the components remain unexplained and point to atmospheric processes that we do not yet know or understand.
