High Altitude Balloons and Riometers as Tools to Understand Energetic Electron Precipitation - Results from The ABOVE^2 and EPEx Missions
Abstract
We present X-ray spectrometer measurements of energetic particle precipitation from the ABOVE^2 and EPEx stratospheric balloon flights (Summer 2016 and 2018). Balloon X-ray spectra are combined with a GEANT4 model of the atmosphere to retrieve data about the original particle injection, which are compared with ground riometer measurements. We demonstrate progress towards using balloon X-ray measurements to enhance the scientific utility of riometer data.
