An Introduction to the Green New Deal and its Implications For Climate Policy
Abstract
The Green New Deal has become the de-facto stand-in for ambitious climate policy within the US political discourse. Several U.S. democratic presidential candidates have publicly supported the Green New Deal and released multiple policy proposals aimed at decarbonizing the US economy. Set against this backdrop, scientists, engineers, and social scientists have an important role to play by using their scholarship to inform the development evidence-based policies. In this brief introductory remark, we will provide a background on US carbon emissions and the challenges to decarbonization across technical, social, and political spheres. Specifically, we will address the broad themes that will form the basis for this panel discussion focusing on the power sector, agriculture and land-use change, and transportation, as well as consider issues of equity, environmental justice, and the political economy of climate legislation. Solutions and frameworks discussed in this session could collectively form the basis for a Green New Deal-style climate policy.
