IRIS Earth Model Collaboration (EMC): share, preview and access
Abstract
The IRIS DMC's Earth Model Collaboration (EMC) is a community-supported repository of Earth models and related tools. The EMC's aim is to facilitate sharing of Earth models and to provide visualization tools for model preview. EMC currently hosts 59 velocity, 3 crustal thickness, 7 electrical resistivity/conductivity, 1 attenuation, and 1 temperature models along with 9 reference Earth models.
In addition to web-based visualization tools, the DMC offers a set of plugins for ParaView, an open-source, multi-platform data analysis and visualization application. These plugins allow ParaView to provide a 3-D desktop-based environment for visualizing EMC and/or user-provided Earth models along with other auxiliary Earth data. Earth models are supported in both netCDF and GeoCSV formats, with a format specification provided by the DMC. Web services are being developed for the EMC repository to complement the existing direct access to EMC Earth model files. The services will allow programmatic access to models, selected subsets, and information. We anticipate a new generation of tools that display models or perform calculations based on models to be developed based on these services. Contributions to EMC are strongly encouraged, and instructions are available for model creators who wish to share their published models.
