Of Stars and Bells: the Sound of Light
Abstract
This paper is about the oldest orchestra that we know of: our universe. Many stars appear to behave like bells or like wind instruments or drums, and reveal multiply-periodic fluctuations in brightness and in local velocities. These oscillations can be observed and understood by measuring and by analyzing the light that we receive on Earth. Some similarities between astronomy and archeoacoustics are outlined, and the relevance of asteroseismology for contemporary astro-music is documented.
