Impressions from a four-week expedition to the Greenland ice sheet: Integrating art, science and education to reach a wider audience
Abstract
In spring 2018, four scientist and two filmmakers went on a four-week research expedition to the Greenland ice sheet. The expedition had two goals. The scientists extracted shallow ice cores and collected ground penetrating radar data to uncover the secrets of increased ice sheet melting. The filmmakers captured footage and audio of the scientists for outreach projects to a larger audience. The expeditions quickly became challenging when all snowmobiles and science equipment broke in the extreme cold weather and intense storms.
In this presentation, Kierin Rogers, one of the filmmaker will share her perspectives on the expedition by showing samples of her work. Besides being a filmmaker and artist, Kierin Rogers is also an undergraduate student enrolled in Rutgers University's Mason Gross School of The Arts. She specializes in experimental documentary; an art form that like traditionally documentaries are grounded in real-world issues but that break cinematic narrative convention. Her participation in the project is part of a larger effort to integrate art, science, and education for science outreach to new audiences.- Publication:
