The impacts of climate change on ecosystems, ecosystem services, and biodiversity in the United States
Abstract
The National Climate Assessment (NCA) is a quadrennial report from U.S. Federal Agencies summarizing the current and projected impacts of climate change on a variety of sectors and regions in the United States. The Ecosystems, Ecosystem Services, and Biodiversity chapter of the NCA provides an overview of climate change impacts to species and populations of living things, key ecosystem processes and characteristics, and the ecosystem services that provide essential benefits to people. To conduct the assessment, a team of 19 federal experts reviewed recent scientific literature, as well as relevant papers received through a solicitation of technical input from the public, and distilled the information into key messages. The chapter has gone through multiple rounds of review, including by the public and National Academies. Building on the findings of the Third NCA, we find additional evidence that climate change is significantly impacting ecosystems and biodiversity in the United States.
