The Unexplored Frontier: Translating the Science of Ocean Exploration
Abstract
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER) is the only federal organization solely dedicated to exploring the global ocean. Through ocean exploration initiatives, OER engages many different stakeholders, from scientists, managers, policy makers, educators, and the public. Innovative tools and techniques are employed by OER to reach these various audiences, including live telepresence interactions, high-definition video and images streamed in real time, digital and paper content, social media, among others. In 2017 alone, the OER website, OceanExplorer.NOAA.gov, had millions of visits and telepresence technology on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer brought exploration of the deep sea to over 10,000 people, allowing them to interact and ask questions of scientists in real time during exploration of the deepest depths of our global ocean. This paper will explore the various mediums used to communicate with different audiences and how effective these tools are at conveying the excitement and science of exploring this uncharted frontier.
