Localized Mountain Green Cover Index: Case study of Sripada Mountain in Sri Lanka
Abstract
In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), more specifically Goal 15 - Target 15.4 - Indicator 15.4.2, this study quantifies the spatiotemporal changes (2001-2013) of green cover in the Sripada Mountain, one of the world heritage sites located in Sri Lanka.
We use MODIS land cover maps to calculate the localized Mountain Green Cover Index. The derived MGCI was aggregated according to mountain classes based on the UNEP-WCMC classification. Subsequently, we investigated the factors driving the Mountain Green Cover Index in the area. Such factors include urbanization, land clearing, forest exploitation, timber extraction, and illegal encroachments, among others. Finally, we forecast the situation for the year 2030 and examined the implications of the findings in the context of SDG 15 - Target 15.4.- Publication:
