Using Citizen Science Projects to Build Science Interest and Literacy During a Community's Science and Engineering Month Celebration
Abstract
Science and Engineering Month (SEM) is celebrated annually during February in Livermore, California. Goals of SEM are to engage the community in science, increase science literacy, make citizens more knowledgeable of and connected to local ecosystems, and increase awareness of local impacts of climate change. Participants are given calls to action to continue their science engagement once the formal program has ended.
Over 35 programs encourage the community to learn about science, engineering, and technology, get outdoors to observe the natural world around them, and contribute to citizen science projects. Citizen science projects serve as a means to engage K - 14 students and the community in science and open the door for deeper discussions of science research, beyond the initial project. A range of public agencies, including government, national laboratories, K - 12 and college education, libraries, park and recreation centers, and businesses participate in SEM. Programs include lectures from research scientists, bio-blitz surveys, water quality testing, guided nature walks, facility tours, training programs for citizen science campaigns, star gazing, and other hands-on activities. Many programs focus on environmental stewardship and local impacts of climate change. Programs are publicized through agency web sites, newspapers, and social media. Livermore's City Council and School Board have given formal proclamations in support of SEM. Science and Engineering Month is seen by partners as an effective way to engage more of the community with science and cross-promote existing programs.- Publication:
