NASA's Universe of Learning: A NASA Astrophysics Learning and Literacy Program
Abstract
NASA's Universe of Learning (UoL) is an integrated astrophysics STEM learning and literacy program designed to enable learners of all ages and backgrounds to explore fundamental questions in science, experience how science is done, and discover the universe for themselves. UoL is a unique partnership between the Space Telescope Science Institute, Caltech/IPAC, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, and Sonoma State University, and is one of 27 competitively-selected cooperative agreements within the NASA Science Mission Directorate Science Activation program. This partnership enables the program to integrate science content from NASA Astrophysics missions and programs into audience- and learning-driven products. Through a diverse portfolio of products, UoL provides a direct connection to the science and the experts from across NASA Astrophysics themes. The portfolio of products includes (1) tools and experiences that enable educators and learners to personally experience the process of science; (2) resources spanning a range of multimedia techniques that enable the audience to make personal connections to our universe; (3) products and programming for communities across the country to increase understanding of the processes of science and our knowledge of the universe, and (4) experiences that enhance the capacity of educators to incorporate NASA Astrophysics resources into their learning environments. Through these products UoL builds pathways that engage learners to explore, interact, and participate in astrophysics content and develop an understanding of NASA's big questions: How does the universe work, How did we get here, and Are we alone. This presentation will include an overview of the NASA's Universe of Learning resources that are available to the public and to the science community looking to engage the public. Learn the many ways scientists can participate in UoL by providing their expertise in science content review, participate in events, and/or assist in the development of products.
