Investigation of Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) Production Mechanisms.
Abstract
Since the launch of the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) in late 2016, and its validation in 2017, valuable observations of lightning optical emissions became available. These observations cover large areas of the Earth with a uniform detection efficiency (better than 80%). GLM observations were used along with triggered TGFs detected by the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) to study TGF production mechanism(s). In this work, a larger sample of TGFs (off-line search) will be used to perform the correlation between TGFs and lightning optical emission. Our analysis of the triggered TGFs suggests that the TGF production mechanism might be a combination of lightning leader processes and a large-scale electric field effect. The large TGF sample will confirm or modify this conclusion, which will be presented in this talk.
