A New Digital 3D Immersive Geologic Map: From the Plio-Pleistocene Calvello Basin of the Southern Apennines, Italy
Abstract
Geologic maps provide critical data, which forms the foundation of most field investigations, by supplying regional and local bedrock lithology conditions and structural framework. However, most maps share the same fundamental limitations - that they can only illustrate details in two dimensions and lack the outcrop-scale details that support significant interpretations. We present a mapping effort from the Southern Apennine Mountains in Basilicata, Italy, integrating field-based mapping supported by UAV-based aerial imagery, to construct a new digital geologic map and immersive 3D basin model of the Plio-Pleistocene clastic successions of the Calvello Basin. The data collection for this study was conducted by traditional field mapping, enhanced by the use of UAV-based Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry, to create Digital Outcrop Models (DOMs) of both outcrop and basin-scale features. Quantitative stratigraphic and structural outcrop data was extracted from the 3D DOMs and then incorporated with "ground-based" measurements and reported as one large volume of map data. The resulting digital map and DOMs have been used as the basis for interpretations of the overall tectonostratigraphic evolution of a compressional thrust-top basin from initiation, to syndepositional deformation of the basin fill, and to the later exhumation and modification by surficial processes. Additionally, the DOMs and other digital media are featured as supplementary materials and interactive points in the digital version of this map, which is available as a KMZ product for visualization in Google Earth.
