Evaluation of the NOAA Enterprise Aerosol Optical Depth Algorithm Applied to GOES-16 ABI
Abstract
NOAA Enterprise aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieval algorithm, initially developed for the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP), was adapted to the GOES Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI). The algorithm has been updated with ABI-specific land reflectance spectral relationships, internal tests, and quality control flags. Its performance has been evaluated against the latest near-realtime AERONET Version 3 Level 1.5 measurements after December 2017 when GOES-16 became operational. Validation results show the retrieval accuracy (bias) is about 0.01 over dark land and water, and precision (standard deviation of retrieval error) is about 0.1 and 0.05, respectively. While the AOD product is still being evaluated to determine any diurnal and seasonal dependent biases, its accuracy is similar to SNPP VIIRS and recommended for operational use in various environmental monitoring and forecasting applications.
