Linking global-scale and urban-scale integrated assessment tools
Abstract
Air quality in many urban areas worldwide contains a mix of locally produced pollution with concentrations transported from distant sources. The broad range of physical scales required for accurately analyzing both of these factors poses several technical challenges. Urban-scale (10 km or less) modeling and measurements are often required to resolve pollution gradients within cities, which have important impacts on exposure estimates as well as relating concentrations to specific source sectors. In contrast, accurate assessments of long-range transport require regional and international perspectives and information about upwind sources. Lastly, the ability to make such evaluations throughout a range of urban areas worldwide requires tools and datasets that are widely available, such as global model estimates and remote sensing data. In this abstract we present the LEAP-IBC toolkit that is used for estimating health, climate, and crop impacts of air pollution at national to global scales, and new efforts to develop and apply a regional-to-urban version of this tool in West Africa, focusing on air quality in Accra. We consider challenges of relating these tools across scales, and synthesis of remote sensing data, local in situ measurements, urban land use, and sub-national distributions of emissions.
