HST Cycle 24 Focal Plane Calibration (SI-FGS alignment)
Abstract
HST Focal Plane calibration: The alignment of each FGS with ACS/WFC and WFC3 UVIS is determined by observing GAIA stars in M35 using each of the three FGSs as "an astrometer" while obtaining F606W images with the cameras in parallel with the FGS exposures. This will yield the scale, rotation, translation of the five apertures in the HST focal plane to the accuracy of about 1 milli-arcseconds, in principle. Updates to the FGS-FGS alignments and the SIAF files associated with WACS and WFC will be made based upon these results, yielding much improved absolute astrometry for all future HST observations.
