On the Bias Between Ice Cap Surface Elevation and CryoSat Results
Abstract
The bias between elevations derived from satellite radar altimetry and the physical surface depends on the surface and near surface conditions, and the processing algorithm [1,2]. Here elevations derived from the SARIn mode of ESA's Cryosat 2 satellite (CS) are compared with reference surface elevations to provide new information on...1. the accuracy of CS estimates of surface height and height change for different areas and conditions,2. a comparison of the accuracy of the 2 types of Cryosat height estimates; from the initial closest approach and subsequent delayed returns, and3. the influence of surface conditions on the bias between the surface and the CS estimated height.
