Characterizing Outbursting Young Stellar Objects with FORCAST Imaging
Abstract
Luminosity outbursts are rare events in the formation of low-mass stars, but the mass that is rapidly accreted in such outbursts may represent a significant fraction of the final mass of each star. We propose to obtain FORCAST photometry from 7.7 to 37.1 microns of three recent outbursts that in some ways resemble the well known FU Orionis outbursts but are of lower luminosity and have not yet been shown to last as long. One of them, HOPS 383, is the youngest outburst to be discovered. SOFIA photometry is the only way to monitor changes in the luminosities and mid-IR spectral energy distributions of these objects several years after their outbursts.
