The Qualification of a Next Generation Li-Ion Cell- The ABSL 18650NL
Abstract
This paper describes ABSL's programme to qualify a next generation Li-ion cell - the ABSL 18650NL cell (the NL cell). The qualification of this cell will introduce a product to the market with a 40% capacity benefit when compared to ABSL's current heritage offering with the 18650HC cell.Space qualification was initially started in 2009 and the cell was used for a series of space programmes. Due to a change in manufacturing location and a change in anode material, the qualification required updating.ABSL initiated a full requalification effort and in addition improved the cell supply agreement to ensure that ABSL batches will be made to order with additional manufacturing controls and traceability for each batch.ABSL's qualification described in this paper is intended to meet the following objectives: * Physical Tests - to enable battery modules to be manufactured, and give data for batch comparison * Environmental Tests - to ensure the cell can survive the space environment * Safety - to ensure the safety mechanisms work consistently * Characterisation and Lifetests - to provide detailed performance information for use in battery sizing
