Initial Sizes of Planetesimals: Implications for Accretion of the Asteroids
Abstract
If asteroids accreted from small (0.1 km) initial planetesimals, large planetary embryos would melt. However, for bodies that remain after dynamical clearing of the belt, a substantial fraction of mass is in bodies small enough to escape melting.
