Monitoring Freshwater Lakes In Denmark- Development Of An Administration Tool Utilizing EO Data
Abstract
The Water Framework Directive (WFD) was established by the EU in 2000 for the protection of waters with the objective of achieving at least a ‘good ecological status' for all waters in the EU by 2015. This requires cost-effective monitoring programs in order to classify these areas. Here satellite technology is an option to gain additional data in an automated and resource-efficient way to enhance current monitoring. Together with traditional survey data, satellite-based information can be integrated into an administration tool to support the national authorities in decision-making and cost-efficient monitoring of freshwaters under the WFD. In this paper we suggest the overall concept of such an administration tool and discuss potentials and give examples on how this can be used in the monitoring of Danish lakes.
