ESPAS, The Near-Earth Space Data Infrastructure for e-Science
Abstract
ESPAS is a cyberinfrastructure project (www.espas-fp7.eu) funded under the e-infrastructure component of the EU Framework 7 programme starting November 2011. This project aims to provide enhanced access to observations made in near-Earth space, including the thermosphere, ionosphere, plasmasphere, radiation belts and magnetosphere and near-Earth solar wind. To address this goal, the first year of ESPAS has focused much effort on the development of a data model that describes these physical domains, that can integrate some 40 datasets proposed for access via ESPAS, and on the testing of that data model though the use cases. This paper will present a summary of the current ESPAS data model and the value of use cases in that work. In particular, it will present results from the first ESPAS workshop (October 2012) where the developing system will be tested against an initial set of use cases.
