NASA and the Navajo Nation: A Collaborative Partnership Bringing Science and Cultural Knowledge Together
Abstract
The NASA and the Navajo Nation project series began in 2005 with a question: are you, the Navajo education community, interested in partnering with NASA on educational initiatives? The answer was yes, and guidelines and priorities were put forward. We were very clear from the start that this effort was being enacted for the benefit of Navajo students and teachers, and may not be transferrable or applicable or scalable to other communities. Six years later, we are finalizing our second set of classroom materials and hosting teacher workshops. These materials bring together science and cultural knowledge in a dual-learning environment in which each 'way of knowing' is allowed to co-exist and interact, and a learner-centered environment wherein the ways in which they interact are not prescribed.
