Bouguer anomalies over medium-size Martian impact basins
Abstract
Gravity anomalies over medium size Martian impact basins (diameters of 200 km - 500 km) have been investigated using the JGMRO110b2 spherical harmonic solution (Konopliv 2010). Our previous investigation, using Parker’s (1972) technique for calculating Bouguer corrections, showed a possible positive correlation between Bouguer anomaly and crater count-based model age as determined by Werner (2008). In addition, as a population, smaller basins have greater variability in free-air anomaly than larger ones. More recent work, using finite-amplitude spherical harmonic solutions for the Bouguer anomaly will be presented. Finally, some forward gravity models for the most intriguing basins, calculated using the technique of Wieczorek and Phillips (1998), will be presented along with implications for the erosional and depositional histories of the analyzed basins.
