Star Formation in Tadpole Galaxies in the Hubble UDF
Abstract
Tadpoles are starbursting galaxies that each have a massive star-forming clump near an end, and a long tail that sometimes contains smaller clumps. We identify over 100 tadpoles in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field out to redshift z=4. Photometric measurements of the clumps and tails in ACS BVIz filters are fit to Bruzual-Charlot evolutionary models including extinction, intergalactic absorption, and exponential decay times in order to derive ages, masses, and surface densities. These are compared to clump and interclump regions in clump cluster and chain galaxies in order to understand whether they are all part of the same evolutionary sequence toward modern spirals.
