MINIMO 2: Hitting Moving Targets in the Southern Sky
Abstract
As part of the RECONS group's effort to find nearby stars we report on our fourth SuperCOSMOS-RECONS (SCR) proper motion search of the southern sky. The most recent effort, dubbed MINIMO 2, targets stars with proper motions between 0.18 and 0.40 arcseconds/year, spanning declinations 0 to -47 degrees. This effort complements that of Finch, who reported on similar stars between declinations -47 and -90. That study revealed 31 systems within 25 pc among more than 7000 systems. Among the present sample of more than 16000 systems, we anticipate that about 10 will be within 10 pc, but currently have no trigonometric parallaxes. We will measure their parallaxes as part of our Cerro Tololo Inter-american Parallax Investigation (CTIOPI), which has been ongoing since 1999. In addition to measuring parallaxes we will go in a new direction: we plan to examine the hundreds of binaries from the MINIMO searches to investigate the multiplicity fraction of red dwarfs with separations 2-300 arcseconds.
