Antarctic Interferometry Progress and Plans
Abstract
Motivated by the potential for unique, high impact science possible with an infrared interferometer located at an exceptional site, several interferometer concepts are being developed for Antarctic Dome C. Three of these concepts are complementary in that they share a focus on exoplanet science and represent a progression in terms of scientific capability. Recent identification of a thin turbulent boundary layer present at Dome C and other Antarctic locations requires the interferometer primary telescopes to be located on towers. Engineering studies during the past year have demonstrated the feasibility of transporting an interferometer to Dome C in containerized modules. Current engineering studies have the goal of demonstrating the feasibility of mounting a 2 m class telescope on a 30 m tower.
