Analysis of NOFS observations of Deep Impact Encounter with Tempel 1
Abstract
The collision of an impactor with comet Tempel 1 on July 4, 2005, was observed at the US Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station with both the 1.3-meter and 1.55-meter telescopes. Exposures with the 1.3-meter were 10 seconds in duration, taken every 12.75 seconds. Over 700 individual images were obtained, beginning at the end of twilight and ending when the comet dropped below the horizon, roughly one-half hour after impact. Differential photometry of the 1.3-meter observations will be discussed, with particular attention given to the timescale of magnitude variations. A movie created with the 1.3-meter images will be shown.
