Search for Wobbling Excitations in Superdeformed Hf Nuclei
Abstract
Four superdeformed sequences were known in ^174Hf and ultimate cranker calculations predict such structures may have significant triaxial deformation. In order to confirm the triaxiality, a Gammasphere experiment was performed to search for linking transitions between a possible wobbling excitation (which is unique for a rotating triaxial nucleus) and its base structure. Unfortunately, no such transitions were found, but four new superdeformed bands in ^174Hf and the first superdeformed band in ^173Hf were observed. Whether triaxiality indeed exists in these Hf nuclei will be addressed in light of the present results.
